June 14, 2013 - Christie, Rubio, Clinton Close In 2016 Colorado Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Udall Gets Lukewarm Reelection Support For 2014 PDF format New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie gets 44 percent to 41 percent for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in an early look at the 2016 presidential race in Colorado, an important swing state, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. In another possible matchup, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida gets 46 percent to Ms. Clinton's 45 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Vice President Joseph Biden trails Gov. Christie 48 - 32 percent and loses to Sen. Rubio 48 - 35 percent. There is a big gender gap in the Christie-Clinton matchup, as women back the Democrat 49 - 38 percent while men back the Republican 51 - 32 percent. Christie leads 86 - 6 percent among Republicans and gets 41 percent of independent voters to Clinton's 38 percent. Democrats go to Clinton 88 - 5 percent. Hispanic voters back Clinton 66 - 26 percent as white voters back Christie 49 - 36 percent. The gender gap is strong in the Rubio-Clinton face-off as women go to her 53 - 38 percent while men go to him 53 - 36 percent. Democrats back Clinton 91 - 3 percent as independent voters split with 44 percent for Clinton and 43 percent for Rubio. He wins Republicans 89 - 7 percent. Hispanic voters go Democratic 66 - 26 percent while white voters go Republican 50 - 40 percent. "Colorado has emerged as an important swing state in presidential politics and these very early numbers reinforce that perception. New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio are in a real horse race - a long horse race - for the White House in 2016," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Way behind is Vice President Joseph Biden," Malloy added. "Is Benghazi tarnishing Ms. Clinton's luster? Is Gov. Christie, the hero of Superstorm Sandy, the leader everyone wants? Has Sen. Rubio recovered from dry mouth? "Or are Colorado voters just shopping around? Time will tell." Colorado voters have a 49 - 17 percent favorable opinion of Christie. Favorability ratings for other possible presidential contenders are: 53 - 44 percent favorable for Clinton; 49 - 39 percent unfavorable for Biden; 39 - 22 percent favorable for Rubio. Obama, Udall Approval Voters disapprove 54 - 43 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing. Disapproval is 90 - 9 percent among Republicans and 58 - 40 percent among independent voters while Democrats approve 91 - 6 percent. Women approve 51 - 46 percent while men disapprove 62 - 35 percent. White voters disapprove 59 - 39 percent as Hispanic voters approve 64 - 31 percent. U.S. Sen. Mark Udall gets a 45 - 31 percent approval rating, with less partisan, gender and ethnic division than President Obama. Voters say 40 - 33 percent that Sen. Udall deserves reelection next year. U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet gets a 40 - 31 percent approval rating. "Colorado voters have little love for President Barack Obama," Malloy said. "As Sen. Mark Udall prepares for a reelection campaign next year, he cannot be happy with an approval rating short of the magic 50 percent mark." From June 5 - 10, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,065 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
