January 31, 2014 - Bridgegate Drives Christie To The Curb In Florida, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Jeb Bush Leads GOP, But Clinton Is Tops PDF format In the 2016 White House race, New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie loses ground among Florida Republicans and in a matchup with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, while former Gov. Jeb Bush remains the top Republican in the state, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Secretary Clinton tops Gov. Christie 51 - 35 percent in an early look at the presidential race, compared to a 45 - 41 percent Clinton edge in a November 22 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Clinton leads Jeb Bush 49 - 43 percent and tops other possible GOP contenders: 51 - 41 percent over U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio; 53 - 38 percent over U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky; 52 - 39 percent over U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin; 54 - 34 percent over U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. Bush leads a hypothetical Republican primary with 25 percent, followed by Rubio with 16 percent, Paul with 11 percent, Cruz with 9 percent, and Christie with 9 percent - down from 14 percent November 22, and Ryan with 5 percent. "New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie isn't finding any sun in the Sunshine State" said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "'Bridgegate' is having a negative effect on his presidential fortunes in Florida. Since Florida is the nation's largest swing state, and one of the early primary states, the numbers are not good news for the New Jersey governor as he tries to weather the storm from the controversy." "Among Florida favorite sons, former Gov. Jeb Bush runs stronger than does Sen. Marco Rubio, although GOP voters are widely split on their presidential choices." "Among all voters, Christie's numbers have fallen and the closest Republican in matchups with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is still Jeb Bush," Brown added. Secretary Clinton dominates a Florida Democratic primary with 64 percent, followed by Vice President Joseph Biden with 9 percent and no other Democrat above 5 percent. Florida voters say 45 - 35 percent that Christie would not make a good president, reversing a 45 - 35 percent positive score November 22. Clinton would make a good president, voters say 58 - 38 percent and Bush would be good, voters say 50 - 40 percent. All other contenders listed get negative marks. Clinton outscores Christie on honesty, but he is close on other key characteristics: 54 - 41 percent that she is honest and trustworthy, compared to 44 - 39 percent for him; 68 - 30 percent that she has strong leadership qualities, compared to 64 - 25 percent; 56 - 40 percent that she cares about their problems, compared to 53 - 34 percent. Among Florida voters, 78 percent have read or heard something about the George Washington Bridge traffic controversy. Of that group, 35 percent say the controversy makes them less likely to vote for Christie, while 4 percent say more likely and 56 percent say the controversy won't affect their vote. Among those who know about the issue, 52 percent say it damages Christie's 2016 White House chances while 4 percent say it ends those chances, as 2 percent say it helps and 37 percent say it has no impact. President Obama's Approval President Barack Obama gets a negative 42 - 53 percent job approval rating, compared to a negative 40 - 57 percent score November 22. He gets negative scores of 45 - 50 percent from women, 38 - 57 percent from men, 8 - 90 percent from Republicans, 36 - 57 percent from independent voters and 30 - 66 percent from white voters. Approval is 81 - 16 percent among Democrats, 84 - 11 percent among black voters and 55 - 37 percent among Hispanic voters. From January 22 - 27, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,565 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. The survey includes 586 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percentage points and 529 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.3 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
