August 25, 2015 - Pennsylvania Voters Say Attorney General Should Quit, Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll Finds; Florida Gov Finally Breaks Even, As Ohio's Kasich Soars PDF format With Democrats divided and only a small gender gap, Pennsylvania voters say 49 - 27 percent that State Attorney General Kathleen Kane should resign, according to a Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll released today. Governors in Ohio and Pennsylvania have positive approval ratings, with Ohio Gov. John Kasich at more than 2-1, and even Florida Gov. Rick Scott gets a split job approval score, the first time in four years he did not get a negative score, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh- pe-ack) University Poll finds. The Swing State Poll focuses on Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania because since 1960 no candidate has won the presidential race without taking at least two of these three states. Looking at 2016 U.S. Senate races, where Democrats hope to gain seats in Florida and Ohio: Florida remains cloudy as the percentage of voters who don't know enough to form an opinion of any of the many candidates whose names have been mentioned ranges from 67 percent to 93 percent; Ohio - The race between Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman and former Gov. Ted Strickland, the Democratic challenger, is too close to call; Pennsylvania - Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey maintains a comfortable lead over Democratic challenger Joe Sestak. "With control of the U.S. Senate in play in 2016, political observers will be watching Florida, where there is a pack of largely unknown contenders," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "Also in play is Ohio, where a Republican incumbent is struggling, and Pennsylvania, where the Republican is in a good position at this time." Florida Florida voters give Gov. Rick Scott a divided 45 - 44 percent job approval rating, compared to a negative 39 - 49 percent score June 22 and the first time since one month after he took office in 2011 that he did not get a negative approval rating. Republicans approve 75 - 18 percent, while disapproval is 69 - 20 percent among Democrats and 51 - 38 percent among independent voters. Men approve 53 - 38 percent while women disapprove 50 - 39 percent. Voters approve 45 - 30 percent of the job U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson is doing and give Sen. Marco Rubio a 57 - 31 percent approval rating. None of the possible candidates in the 2016 race for Rubio's Senate seat has achieved enough voter recognition for a valid measure of their favorability. "With little attention on him these days, Gov. Rick Scott gets his best approval rating ever, perhaps useful for the lame-duck governor who is rumored to be interested in running for the Senate in 2018," Brown said. Ohio Ohio voters approve 61 - 28 percent of the job Gov. John Kasich is doing, matching his all-time high rating. Approval is 84 - 10 percent among Republicans and 60 - 28 percent among independent voters. Democrats are divided 46 - 44 percent. Men approve 62 - 25 percent and women approve 60 - 31 percent. In the 2016 U.S. Senate race, Democratic challenger Ted Strickland gets 44 percent to 41 percent for Republican Sen. Rob Portman. Portman beats Cincinnati City Council member P.G. Sittenfeld 46 - 25 percent. Voters approve 45 - 26 percent of the job Portman is doing and give him a 42 - 19 percent favorability rating. Strickland gets a 44 - 32 percent favorability rating while 88 percent of voters don't know enough about Sittenfeld to form an opinion of him. U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown gets a 47 - 29 percent approval rating. "The too-close-to-call status of the U.S. Senate race between Sen. Rob Portman and former Gov. Ted Strickland is progress for the Republican incumbent who had trailed the Democratic challenger in previous Quinnipiac University polls," said Brown. Pennsylvania Pennsylvania voters disapprove 54 - 20 percent of the job Kathleen Kane is doing as State Attorney General and say 49 - 27 percent that she should resign. Democrats are divided 39 - 37 percent on whether Kane should resign while Republicans say 60 - 16 percent that she should go and independent voters agree 44 - 32 percent. Men favor resignation 51 - 27 percent and women say 46 - 27 percent that Kane should quit. Gov. Tom Wolf gets a 45 - 39 percent approval rating. Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey leads Democratic challenger Joe Sestak 48 - 33 percent. Men back Toomey 57 - 29 percent. Women are divided, with 40 percent for Toomey and 37 percent for Sestak. Toomey leads Katie McGinty, former chief of staff to Gov. Wolf, 48 - 32 percent, with men for Toomey 56 - 26 percent. Women are divided with 40 for Toomey and 38 percent for McGinty. Toomey gets a 49 - 26 percent job approval rating and a 46 - 23 percent favorability rating. For Sestak, 61 percent don't know enough to form an opinion and 74 percent don't know enough about McGinty. U.S. Sen. Robert Casey Jr. gets a 51 - 25 percent approval rating. "U.S. Senators Robert Casey and Pat Toomey and Gov. Tom Wolf all have positive approval ratings," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "Not so for beleaguered Attorney General Kathleen Kane. "Pennsylvania voters say the state's top law enforcement official needs to find another job." From August 7 - 18 Quinnipiac University surveyed: 1,093 Florida voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points; 1,096 Ohio voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points; 1,085 Pennsylvania voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
