Additional Trend Information

Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, in line to become the U.S. Senate Minority Leader, and possibly the Senate Majority Leader if Democrats win control of the Senate this November, leads a largely unknown Republican challenger, Wendy Long, 63 - 24 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Schumer is up 89 - 2 percent among Democrats and 58 - 25 percent among independent voters, while Republicans back Long 59 - 26 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh- pe-ack) University Poll finds.

New York State voters approve 62 - 25 percent of the job Schumer is doing and give him a 58 - 24 percent favorability rating. For Long, 85 percent of voters don't know enough about her to form an opinion.

"Sen. Charles Schumer is poised to become the Democratic leader of the U. S. Senate, one of the most powerful positions in the nation. And if Democrats win control of the Senate this November, Schumer becomes even more powerful," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"Back here in New York, voters endorse Sen. Chuck's reelection over Wendy Long, his all but anonymous opponent. New Yorkers have high regard for Schumer. His job approval is healthy in all sections of the state, and tops 3-1 in New York City.

From March 22 - 29, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,667 New York State voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
