August 5, 2015 - Cuomo, Stringer Top De Blasio Among New Yorkers, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; City Voters Split On Mayor-Gov Albany Battle PDF format Sample and Methodology detail New York City voters approve 58 - 36 percent of the job Gov. Andrew Cuomo is doing and give City Comptroller Scott Stringer a 54 - 21 percent approval rating, while Mayor Bill de Blasio gets a 44 - 44 percent job approval rating, his worst net approval rating ever, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Today's score compares to a 44 - 40 percent approval rating for Mayor de Blasio in a May 12 survey by independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Two years before the 2017 Democratic primary for mayor, New York City voters say 47 - 41 percent that de Blasio does not deserve reelection. Democrats support reelection 53 - 35 percent, with Republicans opposed 88 - 8 percent and independent voters turning thumbs down 56 - 30 percent. The wide racial divide which has marked de Blasio's tenure continues as black voters approve of the mayor 64 - 24 percent and say 58 - 33 percent he deserves reelection. White voters disapprove 59 - 32 percent and say 61 - 29 percent he does not deserve reelection. Hispanic voters approve 48 - 38 percent and back reelection 49 - 40 percent. Voters are divided 47 - 48 percent on whether de Blasio understands their problems, but say 53 - 43 percent that Cuomo cares about the needs and problems of New Yorker City voters. "The election calendar keeps getting shorter. So even though it's two years away, Mayor Bill de Blasio has to be concerned that his re-election numbers are narrowly negative," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll. "The mayor has yet to close the book on the tale of two cities, written on Election Day 2013. Black voters still approve of de Blasio by a lot; white voters don't." New York City voters say 53 - 37 percent that Mayor de Blasio's involvement in national issues is distracting him from his duties as mayor. A total of 45 percent of voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the way things are going in the city today, while 55 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied." There is very little difference among black, white and Hispanic voters. Voters are divided 47 - 44 percent in their approval of the way de Blasio is handling relations between blacks and whites, but he gets negative grades on handling other issues: 38 - 44 percent approval for his handling of public schools: 38 - 43 percent for handling the city budget; 36 - 53 percent for handling poverty and homelessness. De Blasio and Cuomo De Blasio most closely represents their political views, 30 percent of voters say, while 26 percent say Cuomo is closer and 41 percent say neither. Cuomo undermined "de Blasio's efforts to get state legislation important to New York City," 41 percent of voters say, while 39 percent say "de Blasio did not work hard enough to convince New York State legislators to enact legislation important to New York City." Approval ratings for other New York City leaders are: 43 - 23 percent for Public Advocate Letitia James; 38 - 25 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito; 35 - 34 percent for Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina. "Gov. Andrew Cuomo, an off-and-on adversary, and Comptroller Scott Stringer, a potential future opponent, both have higher job approval marks than the mayor. But by a small margin, voters feel more at home ideologically with the mayor than with the governor. "Voters are almost evenly divided on whether they blame the city's troubles in the State Legislature on Cuomo undercutting de Blasio or on the mayor's failure to work hard for his agenda." From July 30 - August 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,108 New York City voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
