Sample and Methodology detail

New York City voters say 65 - 18 percent that elected officials are trying to limit Uber because of campaign donations from the yellow cab industry rather than the best interest of the city, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. There is widespread agreement in every party, gender, racial, age and borough group.

Only 21 percent of New York City voters have used Uber, but the car ordering app gets a 42 - 15 percent favorability rating, with 40 percent who don't know enough about it, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

Traditional car service is the preference for 43 percent of voters, while 24 percent prefer a yellow cab and 19 percent prefer Uber. Manhattan voters prefer yellow cabs over livery cars 44 - 25 percent, with 19 percent for Uber. Preference for livery cars in the other boroughs ranges from 44 percent in Queens to 53 percent in Brooklyn, with preference for Uber ranging from 15 percent in Queens to 26 percent in The Bronx.

Voters oppose 47 - 40 percent the proposal to limit Uber cars. Voters say 53 - 34 percent that a limit on Uber would not reduce traffic.

"Mayor Bill de Blasio was forced to back-track on his plan to limit the number of cars Uber could use, probably a good idea since more voters oppose the cap," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"Why did officials try to limit Uber? Because they got political donations from the taxi industry, voters think.

"That argument that curbing Uber would cut traffic congestion? 'Baloney!' voters say."

New York City voters oppose by a narrow 49 - 44 percent a proposal to charge tolls on East River bridges while reducing tolls on outer borough bridges and using the money for mass transit. This is unchanged from a May 14 Quinnipiac University poll.

Results by borough today are:
  • Bronx: 43 percent support and 48 percent oppose;
  • Brooklyn: 41 - 52 percent;
  • Manhattan: 44 - 47 percent;
  • Queens: 44 - 51 percent;
  • Staten Island: 61 - 31 percent.
Money to maintain roads, bridges and mass transit should come from tolls on the bridges into Manhattan, 24 percent of New York City voters say, while 26 percent say the state gas tax should fund road, bridge and transit repairs and 14 percent point to the city sales tax.

"'Gridlock Sam' Schwartz made a savvy call when he proposed cutting tolls on the so- called outer borough bridges, while imposing tolls on the free East River bridges," Carroll said.

"Widespread opposition to the East River tolls shrinks, when it is linked to cutting other tolls and raising money for mass transit."
Wal-Mart

New York City voters say 55 - 39 percent that officials should allow Wal-Mart to open stores in the city. Even voters in union households want Wal-Mart 54 - 41 percent.

Voters say 64 - 33 percent they would shop at Wal-Mart if it were convenient. Voters in union households say 67 - 30 percent they would shop at Wal-Mart.

New York City voters have mixed opinions about Wal-Mart, saying:
  • 71 - 24 percent that Wal-Mart's lower prices would benefit shoppers;
  • 70 - 23 percent that Wal-Mart's lower prices hurt smaller businesses;
  • 55 - 19 percent that Wal-Mart doesn't pay enough in wages and medical benefits.
From July 30 - August 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,108 New York City voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
