Additional Trend Information

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont both lead likely Republican nominee Donald Trump in the presidential race in New Jersey, according to a poll released today.

Clinton tops Trump 45 - 38 percent, while Sanders leads the Republican 49 - 37 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

While Sanders runs better in the general election, Clinton tops him 54 - 40 percent among likely voters in New Jersey's Democratic primary. Only 6 percent of Democrats are undecided and 15 percent say they might change their mind before the June 7 primary.

The gender and racial gaps are wide in the Clinton-Trump matchup as men back the Republican 46 - 36 percent, while women go Democratic 53 - 32 percent. White voters back Trump 48 - 36 percent, while black voters back Clinton 84 - 3 percent.

Clinton leads among all age groups except voters over 65 years old, who back Trump 49 - 40 percent.

Democrats go with Clinton 84 - 7 percent, while Republicans back Trump 78 - 4 percent. Independent voters are divided, with 41 percent for Clinton and 39 percent for Trump.

"Donald Trump's name was all over Atlantic City in the glory days of casinos, but since the bankruptcies, the Trump name doesn't look like a political winner in New Jersey," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"Sen. Bernie Sanders hangs in there, but New Jersey looks solid for Secretary Hillary Clinton in the June 7 Democratic primary. Some people are 'feeling the Bern.' But in New Jersey the Bern is lukewarm at best," Carroll added.

"Gov. Christopher Christie is helping to design a Trump administration-that-might-be, but solidly blue New Jersey voters would prefer to put a Democrat in the White House."

New Jersey voters give both Clinton and Trump unfavorable ratings, with a negative 38 - 56 percent favorability for her, and a negative 35 - 58 percent score for him.

From May 10 - 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,989 New Jersey voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.2 percentage points. The survey includes 696 likely Democratic primary voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
