Bloomberg Spoils Giuliani Lead In New Jersey Pres Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Bush Approval Drops To Lowest Ever In Any Poll

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton has gained some ground on former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in a 2008 presidential matchup in New Jersey and now trails the Republican front-runner 47 - 44 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This compares to a 49 - 40 percent Giuliani lead April 19.

But if New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg runs as an independent presidential candidate, New Jersey voters give Sen. Clinton 36 percent, with 36 percent for Mayor Giuliani and 18 percent for Mayor Bloomberg, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. In other presidential matchups, without Bloomberg:

Clinton tops Arizona Sen. John McCain 47 - 41 percent;
Clinton beats former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson 50 - 37 percent;
Giuliani beats Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 48 - 40 percent;
Giuliani tops former Vice President Al Gore 47 - 44 percent;
Obama tops McCain 44 - 40 percent;
Obama beats Thompson 49 - 32 percent;
Gore tops McCain 48 - 39 percent;
Gore tops Thompson 52 - 34 percent.

"Sen. Hillary Clinton is growing stronger in New Jersey, and now trails former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani by just three percent in a head to head matchup, compared with nine points in the last poll. And if Mayor Michael Bloomberg runs as an independent, he takes more votes from Giuliani, making the three-way race too close to call," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

In a Democratic primary matchup, Clinton gets 37 percent, with 18 percent for Gore, 15 percent for Obama and 6 percent for John Edwards.

Giuliani overwhelms the Republican primary field with 46 percent, followed by McCain at 11 percent, Thompson at 9 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 7 percent.

"On the Democratic side, Sen. Clinton is dominant, leading 2 - 1 over non-candidate Al Gore, with Sen. Barack Obama slipping into third place and John Edwards struggling for survival. If Gore does not run, Mrs. Clinton inherits half of his votes and is close to a majority in the crowded field," Richards said.

"The Republican field is all Giuliani, who captures nearly a majority anyway you look at the candidate list."

New Jersey voters give Giuliani a 61 - 29 percent favorability rating. Favorability ratings for other contenders are:

50 - 42 percent for Clinton;
50 - 20 percent for Bloomberg;
46 - 30 percent for McCain;
55 - 35 percent for Gore;
49 - 21 percent for Obama;
39 - 30 percent for Edwards;
For Romney, 63 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion;
For Thompson 55 percent haven't heard enough.

Bush Approval

New Jersey voters disapprove 74 - 21 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, the lowest score for any President in more than 10 years of Quinnipiac University polls.

Voters say 76 - 18 percent that the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction.

They disapprove 75 - 21 percent of the way President Bush is handling the war and say 57 - 38 percent that Congress should set a deadline to withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq.

"President Bush's approval rating has hit an all time low of just 21 percent - lower than we've ever measured for a President in any state or national poll," Richards said.

From June 26 - July 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,604 New Jersey voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. The survey includes 505 Republicans, with a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percentage points, and 575 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percentage points.
