Sports Poll: Jersey Jets? Jersey Giants? Garden State Fans On Name Change: 'Fuhgeddaboudit!', Quinnipiac University New Jersey Sports Poll Finds; Can Dart Propel The Giants From Sad To Super? Fans Weigh In

They've long played on New Jersey turf but are known as two NFL teams from New York. Is it time for the Jets and Giants to embrace New Jersey and drop the New York moniker? Nearly six out of 10 NFL fans in the Garden State (59 percent) say no, the Giants and Jets should continue to leave New York in their name, while nearly 3 in 10 NFL fans in the Garden State (29 percent) say the teams should be renamed, according to a Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pea- ack) University sports poll of adults in New Jersey released today. The survey was conducted in collaboration with the Quinnipiac University School of Communications.

"The fact that a majority of New Jersey fans still prefer the New York name speaks volumes about the power of branding, regional identity, and historical precedence. To them, it seems the Giants and Jets represent much more than the literal location of the stadium," said Brittani Webb, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Media Studies, Quinnipiac University School of Communications.

GIANTS QB JAXSON DART

How do NFL fans in New Jersey view rookie Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart? Sixty-two percent of NFL fans in the Garden State are either very confident (24 percent) or somewhat confident (38 percent) in Dart's future as the Giants' starting quarterback, while 15 percent are either not so confident (9 percent) or not confident at all (6 percent).

Among Giants fans, roughly 8 in 10 (81 percent) are either very confident (35 percent) or somewhat confident (46 percent) in Dart's future as the Giants' starting quarterback, while 6 percent are either not so confident (4 percent) or not confident at all (2 percent).

NFL PLAYOFFS? GIANTS

When NFL fans in the Garden State were asked to give their best guess about when the Giants will next make the playoffs, 64 percent say within the next five years, 20 percent say in 5 to 10 years, 5 percent say more than ten years, and 4 percent say probably never again.

"Giants fans are hungry to get in the playoffs. And maybe - maybe? - Jaxson Dart is the answer. But you can understand if they'd like to proceed with caution. They've been to this movie before," added Nick Pietruszkiewicz, Assistant Professor of Journalism and Program Director of Sports Communications, Quinnipiac University.

NFL PLAYOFFS? JETS

When NFL fans in the Garden State were asked to give their best guess about when the Jets will next make the playoffs, 33 percent say within the next five years, 31 percent say in 5 to 10 years, 11 percent say more than ten years, and 16 percent say probably never again.

FAVORITE NFL TEAM

Asked who is their favorite NFL team, New Jersey football fans say the Giants are their favorite (31 percent) followed closely by the Eagles (24 percent) in neighboring Philadelphia, and the Jets (11 percent), with no other team reaching double digits.

1,570 adults in New Jersey were surveyed from October 9th - 13th with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points, including the design effect.
