September 16, 2016 - American Voters Are Pro-Immigrant, Anti-Wall, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds, Voters Concerned About Immigrants' Values PDF format Additional Trend Information Sample and Methodology detail A total of 51 percent of American likely voters, including 80 percent of Donald Trump supporters, are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about "allowing immigrants who hold different values into the U.S.," but voters still say 89 - 9 percent that legal immigration is good for the country, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Among Trump supporters, 88 percent say legal immigration is good. Illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay and apply for citizenship, 61 percent of voters tell the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll. Another 11 percent say illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay but not apply for citizenship and 24 percent say these immigrants should be forced to leave the country. Among Donald Trump voters, 39 percent say illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay and seek citizenship, while 14 percent say immigrants can stay but not seek citizenship and 45 percent say they should be forced to leave. Likely voters oppose 53 - 42 percent building a wall along the border with Mexico. White voters are divided with 49 percent for the wall and 47 percent opposed. Non-white voters are opposed to the wall 69 - 24 percent. A total of 67 percent of likely voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about illegal immigration. Of those concerned voters, 49 percent say "the potential strain on tax-funded services" concerns them most about illegal immigration. "The hallmark of Donald Trump's campaign takes a hit. Despite a majority view that illegal immigration is troubling, likely voters say no to the wall and yes to letting illegal immigrants apply for citizenship," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "Both Democrats and Republicans agree that illegal immigrants using government services is more concerning than the potential that they will increase violent crime." Only 34 percent of American likely voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the way things are going in the country, while 66 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied." Only 6 percent of Trump voters are satisfied, compared to 62 percent of Clinton voters. But 76 percent of voters are very or somewhat satisfied with the way things are going for them, while 23 percent are very or somewhat dissatisfied. A total of 86 percent of Clinton voters and 67 percent of Trump voters are very or somewhat satisfied with how their life is going. American likely voters are divided on President Barack Obama as 50 percent approve of the job he is doing, while 47 percent disapprove. The Democratic Party gets a slightly negative 43 - 48 percent favorability rating, while the Republican Party gets a very negative 31 - 60 percent favorability. A terrorist attack in the near future, "causing large numbers of lives to be lost" is very likely or somewhat likely, 79 percent of American likely voters say. Looking at other concerns: 59 percent of voters are very or somewhat concerned that they or a family member will lose their job or get a significant pay cut; 41 percent of voters, including 43 percent of white voters, are very or somewhat concerned that "reverse racism" will impact their life, while 57 percent of voters, including 55 percent of white voters, are not concerned; 23 percent of voters, including 27 percent of white voters, are concerned about America becoming a majority non-white country; 74 percent of voters are concerned about America falling behind other countries; 72 percent of voters are concerned that the American way of life will change for the worst over the next decade. From September 8 - 13, Quinnipiac University surveyed 960 likely voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.
