Sample and Methodology detail

American voters support 86 - 9 percent the U.S. and its allies "negotiating a deal with North Korea to prevent them from using nuclear weapons," according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Support for negotiations is 77 percent or higher among every party, gender, education, age or racial group.

But voters say 56 - 42 percent they do not have confidence in President Donald Trump to handle the situation with North Korea, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. Confidence is 84 - 12 percent among Republicans, 51 - 47 percent among men, 53 - 44 percent among white voters with no college degree and 55 - 43 percent among white men. The confidence level among all other groups is negative.

Despite this, 60 percent of voters say the U.S. will be able to resolve the issue diplomatically, while 30 percent say military force will be needed. Every group agrees.

American voters are divided 45 - 47 percent on whether they support or oppose the U.S. using conventional weapons to attack North Korea's nuclear facilities.

There are deep gender, party and racial divides:
  • Men support an attack 52 - 41 percent, with women opposed 52 - 38 percent;
  • Republicans support an attack 71 - 19 percent, with Democrats opposed 69 - 27 percent and independent voters divided with 43 percent supporting an attack and 46 percent opposed;
  • White voters are divided, as 47 percent support an attack, with 44 percent opposed. Non-white voters are opposed 53 - 38 percent.
"Most American voters are not confident that President Donald Trump can resolve the precarious Korean standoff, but they remain optimistic that somehow things will work out. They have deep concern over what it means to our security," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"Voters are closely divided on whether to attack Korea with conventional weapons. At the same time, an overwhelming majority wants a negotiated settlement."

"So, we want peace, but a lot of Americans are ready to go to war if they have to," Malloy added.

North Korea poses an immediate threat to the U.S., 48 percent of American voters say, while 28 percent say it is a threat, but not immediate and 20 percent say it is not a threat.

Immigration

By a narrow 48 - 44 percent, voters oppose a proposal to cut in half the number of legal immigrants coming into the U.S. Republicans support the proposal 68 - 25 percent, with Democrats opposed 71 - 22 percent. Independent voters are divided, with 46 percent supporting the proposal and 44 percent opposed.

Men support an immigration cut 52 - 41 percent, with women opposed 55 - 37 percent. White voters are divided, with 45 percent in favor and 47 percent opposed. Non-white voters opposed the proposed cut 53 - 41 percent.

Illegal immigrants should be allowed to remain in the U.S. and apply for citizenship, 63 percent of American voters say, while 10 percent say they should be allowed to stay, but not seek citizenship. Another 22 percent say illegal immigrants should be required to leave.

Climate Change

A total of 66 percent of American voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" that they or a member of their family will be personally affected by climate change, while 33 percent are "not so concerned" or "not concerned at all."

Voters believe 68 - 27 percent "that recent climate change is primarily caused by human activity." Republicans don't believe this 54 - 39 percent, the only group to deny it.

The U.S. should do more to address climate change, 64 percent of voters say, while 19 percent say the U.S. is doing enough and 13 percent say it's doing too much.

From August 9 - 15, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,361 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys nationwide, and in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and Colorado as a public service and for research.
