Additional Trend Information
Sample and Methodology detail

A total of 84 percent of New Jersey voters say it is "very important" or "somewhat important" to add a Hudson River rail tunnel connecting New Jersey and Manhattan, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This compares to 75 percent who said the new tunnel was very or somewhat important in a November 11, 2015, poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

The federal government should provide funding to build a new rail tunnel, New Jersey voters say 73 - 23 percent.

A total of 58 percent of New Jersey voters say having a good mass transit system is "very important" or "somewhat important" to their daily life.

Voters disapprove 65 - 18 percent of the way Gov. Christopher Christie is handling mass transit between New Jersey and New York.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo fares a little better as New Jersey voters disapprove 40 - 32 percent of the way he is handling bi-state mass transit.

Gov. Christie's overall job approval, a negative 18 - 77 percent, remains at historically low levels. Republicans are divided 46 - 47 percent, while every other listed party, gender, education, age or racial group disapproves by wide margins.

Gov. Christie's two terms are "mainly a failure," 65 percent of voters say, while 25 percent say they are "mainly a success."

By an anemic 50 - 37 percent, Republicans say Christie's two terms were mostly a success. Every other group turns thumbs down by wide margins.

"Every day brings new horror stories of foul-ups at Pennsylvania Station and New Jersey voters are listening. Their message to the politicians: Build that tunnel!" said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"New Jersey and New York send far more money to Washington than Washington sends back. The late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan used to make a detailed annual indignant report. Now, New Jersey voters want the feds to put up a few billions for the tunnel," Carroll added.

"New Jerseyans to Gov. Christopher Christie: Thumbs down. Many of his fellow Republicans aren't fans."

New Jersey voters support 52 - 32 percent a "millionaire's tax" to help balance the state budget.

By a wider 67 - 31 percent, voters support "raising taxes on people who earn more than one million dollars to help fund public employee pensions."

But voters oppose 61 - 35 percent "raising taxes across the board to help fund public employee pensions."

In another contradiction, Garden State voters say 51 - 40 percent that the state has an obligation to fix public employee pensions, even if it means raising taxes. Voters oppose 53 - 40 percent reducing pensions for new state workers.

Public Schools

A total of 67 percent of New Jersey voters say the state's public schools are "excellent" or "good." A total of 73 percent of voters say their local schools are "excellent" or "good."

The quality of New Jersey's public schools is getting better, 13 percent say, while 25 percent say it is getting worse and 53 percent say it's the same.

Looking again at the "millionaire's tax," voters support it 69 - 27 percent if the money goes to the state's public schools.

All public schools in New Jersey should get the same state funding per student, 51 percent of voters say, while 44 percent support the current system where schools in low-income districts get more funding per student.

From April 26 - May 1, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,209 New Jersey voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
