February 28, 2001 - Green On Top In Any Democratic Mayoral Runoff, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; New Yorkers Applaud Clinton Move To Harlem Public Advocate Mark Green leads the four-way race for the New York City Democratic mayoral primary and is ahead in any possible face-to-face mayoral primary runoff, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. In the Democratic primary, Green gets 31 percent, followed by 19 percent for Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer, 11 percent for City Council Speaker Peter Vallone, 9 percent for Comptroller Alan Hevesi and 27 percent undecided. If no candidate gets 40 percent of the primary vote, forcing a runoff, results are: Green over Ferrer, 49 - 33 percent, with 18 percent undecided; Green over Vallone, 53 - 26 percent, with 18 percent undecided; Green over Hevesi, 55 - 22 percent, with 20 percent undecided; Ferrer over Vallone, 42 - 33 percent, with 23 percent undecided; Ferrer over Hevesi, 44 - 32 percent, with 22 percent undecided; Vallone over Hevesi, 39 - 31 percent, with 27 percent undecided. From February 20 - 26, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,087 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent. The survey includes 677 registered Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percent. "At this stage, Green picks up all the marbles. He leads a four-way primary and, if there's a runoff, he leads each of the other three. No matter what the runoff matchup, Hevesi loses," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. By a 45 - 31 percent margin, New York City voters have a favorable opinion of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, with 22 percent mixed and 1 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. Favorability ratings for possible mayoral candidates are: Favorable Unfavorable Mixed No Opinion Ferrer 38% 7% 17% 37% Green 44 11 19 26 Hevesi 33 6 19 41 Vallone 34 8 26 32 Rev. At this time last year, New Jersey voters were telling us the same thing about another zillionaire -- Jon Corzine," Carroll said. "Today, it's Sen. Corzine." By a 73 - 11 percent margin, New York City voters approve of former President Clinton's decision to open an office in Harlem. And 61 percent of voters say the Clinton move will improve Harlem's business climate, while 34 percent say it won't make a difference and 2 percent say it will make Harlem worse. By a 63 - 28 percent margin, New Yorkers would support Clinton if he opened an office in their neighborhood. New Yorkers split 47 - 49 percent on whether they would like to see Clinton run for mayor some day. "President Clinton's a genius at turning bad news into good. New Yorkers applaud his move to Harlem and would welcome him in their neighborhood," Carroll said. "Almost half of New Yorkers would even like to see Clinton run for mayor." The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
