November 18, 2019 - Biden Dominates South Carolina Dem Primary, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Undecided Is In Second Place PDF format Sample and Methodology detail In South Carolina, the first southern state to hold a presidential primary, former Vice President Joe Biden holds a commanding 20-point lead among likely Democratic primary voters, according to a Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pea-ack) University poll released today. Biden wins the support of 33 percent of likely voters, while Senator Elizabeth Warren receives 13 percent and Sen. Bernie Sanders gets 11 percent. South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has 6 percent, businessman Tom Steyer gets 5 percent, businessman Andrew Yang is at 4 percent, Sen. Kamala Harris has 3 percent, and Sen. Cory Booker receives 2 percent. No other candidate tops 1 percent, and 18 percent of likely voters are undecided. Biden has a big lead with "moderates and conservatives," winning 36 percent, followed by Sanders at 10 percent. Among "somewhat liberal" voters, it is a close race between Biden and Warren, with Biden at 28 percent, Warren at 23 percent, and Sanders and Yang each at 10 percent. Biden and Warren are tied at 28 percent each among "very liberal" voters, with Sanders receiving 20 percent. Among white voters, Biden has 22 percent, while Warren receives 17 percent, with Sanders and Buttigieg each at 11 percent. Biden has a huge lead among black voters as he wins 44 percent. Sanders gets 10 percent, Warren has 8 percent, and Buttigieg receives less than one percent among black voters. A majority of likely voters, 55 percent, say they might change their minds before the primary, while 43 percent say their minds are made up. "Unlike tight races in Iowa and New Hampshire, South Carolina has a clear frontrunner in the Democratic primary. Former Vice President Joe Biden has broad based appeal, with particularly strong leads among black and moderate/conservative voters. Where South Carolina is similar to other early states: choices are not set in stone. Roughly 4 in 10 of likely Democratic primary voters say their minds are made up," said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Mary Snow. Biden is the most favorably viewed of all the candidates, as 71 percent of likely South Carolina Democratic primary voters have a favorable view of the former Vice President, while only 18 percent have an unfavorable view - resulting in a plus 53 net favorability rating. Sanders gets a 62 - 26 percent favorability rating, which is a plus 36 net score. Warren has a 51 - 20 percent favorability rating, which is a plus 31 net favorability rating. There is a big range in how familiar likely voters are with the Democratic candidates. The most well- known candidates are Biden and Sanders, as 89 percent and 88 percent of likely voters, respectively, are able to express either a favorable or unfavorable opinion about them. The least known candidate is the newest candidate, Deval Patrick, who only 19 percent have heard enough about to express an opinion. "Newly announced Democratic presidential candidate Deval Patrick, the former Massachusetts governor, has his work cut out for him in introducing himself to voters. Nearly 8 in 10 likely voters say they haven't heard enough about Patrick to form an opinion of him. More likely voters are familiar with Michael Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor contemplating a run, as roughly 5 in 10 haven't heard enough - but voters that have an opinion view him more unfavorably than favorably," added Snow. Likely voters are split on the most important quality they are looking for in a candidate with 24 percent saying "someone who can win the general election," 24 percent saying "honesty," and 24 percent saying "someone who cares about people like you." "Good leadership skills" gets 15 percent, and 9 percent say "experience in public office." More likely voters, 30 percent, say "health care" is the most important issue in deciding who to support than any other issue. "The economy" is the next most frequent response with 20 percent, followed by climate change at 13 percent and gun policy at 10 percent.
