Sample and Methodology detail

California has a housing crisis, 78 percent of Golden State voters, both renters and homeowners, say in a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

Every listed party, gender, racial, regional and age group, including 75 percent of homeowners and 84 percent of those who rent their home, agree there is a housing crisis, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

California voters support 74 - 20 percent, including 52 - 37 percent among Republicans, building more housing for low-income people in the state.

And voters support 71 - 23 percent, including a divided 49 - 42 percent among Republicans, building more housing for low income people in their community.

Homelessness is a "very serious" problem in California, 82 percent of voters say, as 15 percent say it's a "somewhat serious" problem.

Only 17 percent of California voters say the homeless are to blame for their situation, while 59 percent say homelessness is due to factors beyond the control of the homeless.

The cost of housing in California is a major cause of homelessness, voters say 59 - 36 percent. Republicans are divided as 42 percent say the cost of housing is a major cause of homelessness, while 49 percent say no. Every other listed party, gender, racial, regional and age group agrees that housing costs are a major cause of homelessness.

California is doing too little to help homeless people, 67 percent of voters, including 63 percent of Republicans, say. Another 7 percent say the state is doing too much and 17 percent say state efforts to help the homeless are "about the right amount."

"There is enormous concern over the state's spiraling homeless issue, but there is empathy, as California voters do not blame the homeless for their living situation. In fact, voters believe the homeless aren't getting the support they need," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Only 53 percent of California voters, including 40 percent of voters 18 to 34 years old, say they can afford to live in the Golden State.

Earthquakes

Some 72 percent of California voters are concerned there will be a major earthquake that will affect their community sometime in their lifetime. By region, this concern ranges from 57 percent of voters living inland or in the Valley to 80 percent in Los Angeles County.

Only 52 percent of voters, including 49 percent of voters in Los Angeles County, think they are adequately prepared to deal with a major earthquake.

But 92 percent of California voters say recent earthquakes do not make them consider moving out of the Golden State.

"A large majority of California voters are very worried about earthquakes, but half of them say they are not prepared to deal with one and virtually no one plans to pick up roots and head elsewhere," Malloy said.

Governor's Job Approval

California voters give Gov. Gavin Newsom a divided 39 - 38 percent job approval rating, down from a 40 - 33 percent approval rating April 11.

Today, Democrats approve 67 - 11 percent. Disapproval is 76 - 6 percent among Republicans and 46 - 36 percent among independent voters. By region, the governor gets his worst score, a 44 - 31 percent disapproval, in Southern California. His best score, a 59 - 28 percent approval, comes in the Bay Area.

Sen. Diane Feinstein also gets a split 41 - 41 percent approval rating, down from a 47 - 37 percent approval April 11.

Horse Racing

California voters oppose 24 - 17 percent a ban on horse racing in the state. Another 57 percent have no opinion.

From July 10 - 15, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,125 California voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.9 percentage points, including the design effect.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts gold standard surveys using random digit dialing with live interviewers calling landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts nationwide surveys and polls in more than a dozen states on national and statewide elections, as well as public policy issues.
