March 5, 2015 - Walker, Bush In Tight Race Among U.S. Republicans, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Clinton Sweeps Dem Field, With Biden In The Wings PDF format Sample and Methodology detail Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, with 18 percent, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush with 16 percent, top the list of possible 2016 presidential nominees among Republican or Republican leaning voters nationwide, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee are at 8 percent each, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. Physician Ben Carson has 7 percent, with 6 percent each for U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and 5 percent for U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. No other Republican contender tops 2 percent. Another 17 percent are undecided. If Walker does not run, Bush gets 18 percent, with 10 percent for Carson, 9 percent each for Christie and Huckabee, 8 percent each for Cruz and Paul and 7 percent for Rubio. If Bush is out of the race, Walker gets 20 percent, with 10 percent for Christie, 9 percent for Huckabee and 8 percent each for Carson and Rubio. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the 2016 presidential choice of 56 percent of Democratic or Democratic leaning voters nationwide, with 14 percent for U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, 10 percent for Vice President Joseph Biden and 4 percent for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Another 14 percent are undecided. If Secretary Clinton does not run, Vice President Biden gets 35 percent, with 25 percent for Sen. Warren and 7 percent for Sen. Sanders, with 25 percent undecided. "It's Gov. Scott Walker and former Gov. Jeb Bush head to head for the GOP and Hillary Clinton virtually unchallenged among Democrats. Her 4-1 margin over Sen. Elizabeth Warren and 5-1 lead over Vice President Joseph Biden say it's hers if she wants it," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. Christie and Bush lead the "no" list, as each candidate gets 16 percent when Republicans are asked if there is any candidate, they "would definitely not support." Biden leads the Democratic "no" list with 10 percent, followed by former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley with 8 percent. The biggest winner on the "no" list is Donald Trump, as 51 percent of all voters say they definitely would not vote for him and 25 percent say they probably would not vote for him. "Donald Trump gets a rousing 'you're fired' before he even declares his intentions," Malloy added. Only 30 percent of all American voters want the next president to continue with President Barack Obama's policies, while 59 percent want the next president to "change direction." In a general election match-up, Clinton gets 45 percent to Bush's 42 percent. The Democrat tops other Republicans: 46 - 39 percent over Christie; 47 - 41 percent over Paul; 47 - 40 percent over Huckabee; 46 - 41 percent over Rubio; 48 - 39 percent over Walker; 48 - 38 percent over Cruz. With a divided 48 - 45 percent, Clinton has the highest favorability rating among all American voters. Favorability ratings for Republican contenders are: Negative 32 - 39 percent for Christie; 31 - 31 percent for Paul; 34 - 32 percent for Huckabee; Negative 34 - 40 percent for Bush; 30 - 22 percent for Rubio, with 48 percent who don't know enough about him to form an opinion; 23 - 24 percent for Walker, with 52 percent who don't know enough about him; Negative 23 - 29 percent for Cruz, with 46 percent who don't know enough about him. From February 26 - March 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,286 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points. The survey includes 554 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percentage points and 493 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
