June 1, 2015 - U.S. Voters Back Supreme Court Ok For Gay Marriage, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Less Support For Death Penalty - Except For Terrorism PDF format Sample and Methodology detail American voters say 56 - 38 percent they would support a U.S. Supreme Court decision granting same-sex couples the constitutional right to marry, according to a Quinnipiac University National poll released today. Voters support 56 - 36 percent same-sex marriage in general. Backing a possible Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex marriage are Democrats 70 - 24 percent, independent voters 61 - 34 percent, men 55 - 41 percent and women 57 - 35 percent. Republicans are opposed 62 - 34 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University Poll finds. Voters also oppose 53 - 40 percent allowing individual states to prohibit same-sex marriage, and support 57 - 36 percent requiring states to recognize same-sex marriages legally performed in other states. Democrats, independent voters, men and women back same-sex marriage in these questions, with Republicans opposed. American voters are leaning against the death penalty in general, as 48 percent say a person convicted of murder should be sentenced to life without parole, while 43 percent back the death penalty for convicted murderers. A person convicted of murder during an act of terror should receive the death penalty, 58 percent of voters say, while 36 percent call for life without parole. Convicted Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev should get the death penalty, 62 percent of voters say, while 34 percent back life without parole. "American voters may be moving away from the death penalty in general, but there is absolutely no ambivalence when it comes to executing convicted Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. President Obama Approval American voters disapprove 50 - 43 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing, compared to a 49 - 44 percent disapproval in an April 27 Quinnipiac University poll. Voters disapprove 61 - 30 percent of the job Democrats in Congress are doing and disapprove 73 - 17 percent of the job Republicans in Congress are doing. The U.S. and its allies are losing the fight against ISIS, American voters say 64 - 17 percent. Republicans, Democrats and independent voters, and men and women, all agree the U.S. is losing. America is doing too much around the world and should focus more on domestic problems, 64 percent of voters say, while 32 percent say the U.S. must continue to promote democracy around the world. "Americans, by a huge margin, believe the fight against ISIS is being lost," Malloy said. "By a 2-1 margin, voters think the United States is too overextended and should focus on domestic issues." Trains, Planes and Automobiles Only 5 percent of American voters rely on trains when traveling long distances, while 50 percent go by plane; 41 percent go by car and 2 percent take the bus. They feel most safe traveling by car, 51 percent of Americans say, while 31 percent feel most safe on a plane; 11 percent feel safest on a train and 3 percent feel safest on a bus. But 30 percent feel least safe on a plane, followed by 26 percent on a bus, 23 percent in a car and 14 percent on a train. From May 19 - 26, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,711 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
