Sample and Methodology detail

A total of 66 percent of American voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" that climate change will affect them or a family member personally, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today.

The U.S. should discourage the use of coal because of environmental concerns, 56 percent of voters say, while 36 percent say the U.S. should encourage coal use, citing jobs and economic benefits, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

A total of 76 percent of American voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about climate change. Other voter attitudes on climate change are:
  • Voters do not believe 76 - 19 percent that climate change is a hoax;
  • Voters believe 65 - 28 percent that climate change is caused by human activity;
  • Voters say 62 - 28 percent President Donald Trump should not remove specific regulations intended to combat climate change;
  • Voters say 72 - 25 percent it's a "bad idea" to cut funding for scientific research on the environment and climate change;
  • The U.S. is doing enough to address climate change, 18 percent say, while 18 percent say the U.S. is doing too much and 59 percent say more needs to be done;
  • 56 percent say there has been more extreme or unusual weather in recent years;
  • 68 percent of voters say the U.S. can fight climate change and protect jobs, while 24 percent say one goal hurts the other.
A total of 92 percent of American voters say it is "very important" or "somewhat important" that the U.S. produces all of its own energy - energy independence.

"It's personal. Climate change is an existential threat, many voters feel. They are concerned, and some are very concerned, about the looming menace of climate change," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

In an open-ended question, allowing for any answer, 12 percent of American voters list health care as the most important problem facing the nation, with 11 percent each for the economy and the Trump Administration.

The U.S. Senate should confirm Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court, American voters say 50 - 35 percent. But voters say 67 - 25 percent it is a "bad idea" to change Senate rules to bypass a filibuster to allow confirmation by a simple 51-vote majority.

Opposed to this so-called "nuclear option" are Democrats 86 - 8 percent and independent voters 69 - 26 percent. Republicans are divided with 47 percent saying it's a "good idea" and 43 percent saying it's a "bad idea."

The Wall

American voters oppose 64 - 33 percent building a wall on the border with Mexico, the highest level of opposition measured so far and up from 60 - 37 percent opposition in a February 23 Quinnipiac University poll.

Republicans support the wall 72 - 24 percent and white voters with no college degree are divided 50 - 47 percent. All other partisan, gender, age, racial or education group listed oppose the wall.

"And The Wall keeps tumbling down, or at least support for what was once a crowd-pleasing campaign promise," Malloy said.

That Russian Thing

American voters disapprove 56 - 30 percent of President Donald Trump's handling of U.S. policy toward Russia.

Voters support 68 - 27 percent an independent commission to investigate potential links between Trump campaign advisors and the Russian government.

But voters are divided 44 - 44 percent on whether they believe individuals in the Trump campaign coordinated with the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

Still, 64 percent of American voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about President Trump's relationship with Russia.

From March 30 - April 3, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,171 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.

Opponents of the coal industry say that the use of coal as an energy source has negative impacts on the environment and that coal miner jobs cannot be saved because they are being taken by machines. 57. The current rules of the U.S. Senate allow a filibuster to be used on a vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee, which means it would require 60 votes instead of 51 to confirm the nominee. In most cases, this allows the minority party to have a say on the Supreme Court nominee. Do you think it would be a good idea to change this rule and allow a Supreme Court nominee to be confirmed with 51 votes, or do you think it would be a bad idea to change this rule?
