Sample and Methodology detail

Undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children should be allowed to stay and apply for citizenship, 82 percent of American voters, including 69 percent of Republicans, say in a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Another 6 percent say they should be allowed to stay and not become citizens and 10 percent say they should be required to leave.

Voters say 72 - 19 percent that President Donald Trump was right to work with Democrats to pass a law protecting so-called "Dreamers." But voters oppose 57 - 37 percent linking an agreement to protect "Dreamers" with providing funds to build the wall on the Mexican border, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

American voters oppose building the wall on the Mexican border 60 - 37 percent.

Offered three alternatives for dealing with all illegal immigrants:
  • 68 percent of voters say they should be allowed to stay with a path to citizenship, the highest level of support for this option in any Quinnipiac University poll;
  • 9 percent say these immigrants should be allowed to stay, with no path to citizenship;
  • 19 percent say undocumented immigrants should be forced to leave the country.
Illegal immigrants convicted of a serious crime should be deported, 52 percent of voters say, as 23 percent say illegal immigrants convicted of any crime should be deported; 20 percent say all illegal immigrants should be deported, while 2 percent say no immigrants should be deported.

Health care is the most important problem facing the country today, 26 percent of voters say, with 15 percent who list race relations, 14 percent who cite the economy and 13 percent who say foreign policy.

"For Dreamers feeling unwanted, 82 percent of voters say, 'Keep the dream alive,'" said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"President Donald Trump's menacing approach to North Korea has made a bad situation worse, say voters, many of whom have lost hope in a diplomatic solution."

American voters are losing hope for a peaceful resolution to the dispute with North Korea as 50 percent think it will be resolved diplomatically, down from 64 percent in an August 24 Quinnipiac University poll. The U.S. will need to use military force, 35 percent of voters say, up from 26 percent last month.

It is more important to avoid war than to take away North Korea's nuclear weapons, voters say 52 - 43 percent.

President Trump's threat to "totally destroy" North Korea is not in the best interest of the U.S., voters say 67 - 28 percent. And voters say 56 - 41 percent they do not have confidence in Trump to handle the situation with North Korea. Environment, Health Care

American voters say 60 - 30 percent that the U.S. should remain part of the Paris Accord. Republicans favor withdrawal 59 - 27 percent and white men are divided, as 48 percent say remain in the Accord and 44 percent say withdraw. Every other listed party, gender, education, age and racial group favors being part of the Paris Accord by wide margins.

There has been more extreme or unusual weather in the U.S. in the last few years, 64 percent of voters say, while 32 percent say the weather has been about the same.

A total of 64 percent of American voters are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" that they or a family member will be personally affected by climate change.

American voters disapprove 59 - 19 percent of the Republican health care plan to replace the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, and disapprove 81 - 11 percent, including 66 - 25 percent among Republican voters, of the way Republicans in Congress are handling health care.

From September 21 - 26, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,412 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.
