January 24, 2018 - Dems, Trump Share Blame For 'Unnecessary' Shutdown, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Voters Are Dissatisfied, Angry With Government PDF format Additional Trend Information Sample and Methodology detail The federal government shutdown was "mainly unnecessary" 84 percent of American voters say, as 13 percent say it was "mainly necessary," according to a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. Voters in every party, gender, education, age and racial group say overwhelmingly the shutdown was "mainly unnecessary." The shutdown hurt Democrats in Congress and President Donald Trump more than Republicans in Congress, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. Democrats are responsible, 32 percent of voters say, while 31 percent say President Trump is responsible and 18 percent point to Republicans. Among independent voters, 28 percent blame Democrats; another 28 percent blame Trump and 20 percent blame Republicans. But overall, American voters dislike Republicans in Congress more than they dislike Democrats and want Democrats to win control of the House and Senate this year: Voters disapprove of Republicans in Congress 70 - 24 percent; Voters disapprove of Democrats in Congress 63 - 30 percent; Voters say 51 - 38 percent, including 46 - 35 percent among independent voters, they want the Democratic Party to win control of the U.S. House of Representatives; Voters say 53 - 39 percent, including 53 - 33 percent among independent voters, they want Democrats to win control of the U.S. Senate. "American voters to the Democrats in Congress: We don't like you, and we like your Republican counterparts even less," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "But that shutdown... It's on the Democrats and President Donald Trump. And it was a big waste of time. "While Republicans in Congress don't get much of the blame for the shutdown, they should take note of the consistent, strong support for action to help the Dreamers." American voters support 75 - 18 percent, including 49 - 37 percent among Republicans, allowing undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children - so-called "Dreamers" - to remain in the U.S. legally. This compares to 73 - 21 percent support for a Dreamers bill in a January 18 Quinnipiac University poll, conducted before the shutdown. But even voters who support a Dreamers bill say 53 - 43 percent that the government shutdown was not worth it. No one gets good grades for handling the Dreamers issue as voters disapprove: 50 - 42 percent of the way Democrats in Congress are handling the issue; 68 - 24 percent of the way Republicans in Congress are handling the issue; 65 - 30 percent of the way Trump is handling the issue. Congress should not get paid during a government shutdown, voters say 92 - 7 percent. Dissatisfaction, Anger with Government Only 2 percent of American voters are "enthusiastic" about the way the federal government works and 19 percent are "satisfied." Another 45 percent of voters are "dissatisfied" and 32 percent are "angry." Among Hispanic voters, 43 percent are angry, compared to 33 percent of white voters and 20 percent of black voters. From January 19 - 23, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,245 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts nationwide public opinion surveys, and statewide polls in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and Colorado as a public service and for research.
