Sample and Methodology detail

American voters hope 61 - 28 percent they can avoid discussing politics with family and friends over Thanksgiving dinner, according to a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today.

"The way people talk about politics these days is contributing to violence in the U.S.," voters tell the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University National Poll 65 - 28 percent. Every listed party, gender, education, age and racial group agrees.

Since President Donald Trump was elected, "the level of hatred and prejudice in the U.S. has increased," 59 percent of voters say, as 32 percent say it has not changed and 5 percent say it has decreased.

Prejudice against minority groups in the U.S. today is a "very serious" problem, 47 percent of voters say, as 31 percent say it is a "somewhat serious" problem.

Prejudice against Jewish people in the U.S. today is a "very serious" problem, 29 percent of voters say, as 40 percent say it is "somewhat serious."

Prejudice against white people in the U.S. today is a "very serious" problem, 14 percent of voters say, as 28 percent say it is "somewhat serious."

President Trump has "deliberately encouraged" white supremacist groups, 35 percent of American voters say, as 18 percent say he has "accidentally encouraged" these groups through his decisions and behavior. Another 36 percent say the president has had no impact on white supremacist groups and 3 percent say he has discouraged these groups.

"Pass the cranberries and dressing, but hold the political vitriol, say voters who foresee a looming Thanksgiving dinner donnybrook," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"An impossible-to-digest smorgasbord of prejudice and division is served up on a day Americans hope to give thanks for all they have."

White supremacist groups pose an "immediate threat to the U.S.," 37 percent of American voters say, as 21 percent say these groups pose a threat, but not an immediate threat, and 36 percent say these groups do not pose a threat to the U.S.

Trump and the Media

The news media is an important part of democracy, 69 percent of voters say, while 21 percent say the news media is the enemy of the people. Republicans are divided as 44 percent say the media is the enemy of the people and 42 percent say it is an important part of democracy. Every other listed party, gender, education, age and racial group supports the media by wide margins.

American voters trust the news media more than they trust President Trump, 54 - 34 percent, to tell the truth about important issues.

"Note to journalists: You are not the enemy. The people - and the Constitution - have your back," Malloy said.

Immigration

It was not necessary for Trump to send more than 5,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, voters say 55 - 38 percent.

Only 26 percent of voters say undocumented immigrants are more likely than American citizens to commit crimes, while 65 percent of voters do not believe that.

American voters say 47 - 37 percent that it should be easier rather than harder for people to legally immigrate to the U.S.

"Voters question the wisdom of sending the military to the border," Malloy said.

From November 14 - 19, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,046 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points, including the design effect.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts gold standard surveys using random digit dialing with live interviewers calling landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts nationwide surveys and polls in more than a dozen states on national and statewide elections, as well as public policy issues.
