June 12, 2019 - A Sitting President Should Face Charges, U.S. Voters Say, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; But Voters Still Say Don't Impeach Trump PDF format Trend Information Sample and Methodology detail Any sitting president should be subject to criminal charges, 69 percent of American voters say in a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today, while 24 percent say a president should be charged with crimes after he or she leaves office. Support for charging a sitting president is 52 - 35 percent among Republicans, 83 - 12 percent among Democrats and 68 - 26 percent among independent voters, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University National Poll finds. President Donald Trump committed crimes before he took office, voters say 57 - 29 percent. But voters are divided 45 - 45 percent on whether President Trump committed crimes while he has been in office. And American voters say 55 - 35 percent that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report did not clear Trump of any wrongdoing. Despite these findings, American voters say 61 - 33 percent that Congress should not begin the process to impeach President Trump. Support for impeachment is 62 - 32 percent among Democrats and 63 - 31 percent among black voters. Every other listed party, gender, education, age and racial group opposes impeachment. Voters are closely divided on whether Congress should investigate to determine whether to bring impeachment charges against Trump as 48 percent say yes and 49 percent say no. Voters say 50 - 44 percent that Trump does not deserve to be impeached. "Complete exoneration??? "Case closed??? "'Hold on, Mr. President,' most American voters say," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "Even though questions clearly linger on the true thrust of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report, an even larger majority says impeachment is just not the way to go." "As for charging ANY president who commits a criminal offense while still occupying the White House there is almost 3-1 support: If you do the crime you should do the time, say Republicans and Democrats," Malloy said. If a political candidate supports impeachment, 32 percent of voters say they are less likely to support that candidate, while 13 percent are more likely and 51 percent say support for impeachment would have no impact on their vote. American voters disapprove 64 - 25 percent of the way Democrats in Congress are handling the issue of impeachment and disapprove 59 - 24 percent of the way Republicans in Congress are handling impeachment. Overall, voters disapprove 59 - 34 percent of the way Democrats in Congress are doing their job and disapprove 66 - 27 percent of the way Republicans in Congress are doing their job. From June 6 - 10, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,214 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points, including the design effect. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts gold standard surveys using random digit dialing with live interviewers calling landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts nationwide surveys and polls in more than a dozen states on national and statewide elections, as well as public policy issues.
