Sample and Methodology detail

A majority of registered voters nationwide, 56 percent, say that climate change is an emergency, while 42 percent do not. Democrats say that climate change is an emergency 84 - 14 percent, independents say the same 63 - 36 percent, and Republicans say that climate change is not an emergency 81 - 18 percent. Among 18 to 34 year old voters, who may expect to be the most affected by climate change, 74 percent say that climate change is an emergency, while 24 percent do not.

Voters also think that the United States isn't doing enough to address climate change, with 67 percent of voters saying more needs to be done - a new high since the question was first asked by the Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pea-ack) University Poll in December 2015. An additional 20 percent say that the U.S. is doing enough to address climate change, and 8 percent saying that the U.S. is doing too much. Asked whether or not they are worried that they or someone in their family might be affected by an extreme weather event, 40 percent of voters say that they are worried, while 59 percent say that they are not worried.

"As fires in the Amazon rainforest serve as just the latest concern about the planet, there is a sense of urgency about climate change among American voters," said Mary Snow, Polling Analyst for the Quinnipiac University Poll. "More than half call it an emergency."

Gun Laws and Mass Shootings

Congress needs to do more to reduce gun violence say 72 percent of voters, including 50 percent of Republicans, 93 percent of Democrats, and 75 percent of independents.

Voters say 60 - 34 percent that they support stricter gun laws in the United States. An identical 60 percent support a nationwide ban on assault weapons, including 37 percent of Republicans, 85 percent of Democrats, and 60 percent of independents. However, voters were split on the idea of a mandatory assault weapon buyback - 46 percent of voters support the concept, including a meager 18 percent of Republicans, 71 percent of Democrats, and 47 percent of independents.

"In a country gripped by political polarization, American voters are united in their message to Congress: do more to reduce gun violence," adds Mary Snow.

Looking at all the specific gun policy proposals that voters were asked about, support ranges from very strong to split:
  • 93 - 6 percent support for universal background checks;
  • 82 - 16 percent support for requiring a license to purchase a gun;
  • 80 - 15 percent support for a "red flag" law;
  • 60 - 36 percent support for a ban on assault weapons;
  • 46 - 49 percent on a mandatory buyback of assault weapons.
On gun licensing and both questions regarding assault weapons, there are huge gender gaps. This includes a double digit gap on each question between white men and white women. In each instance, both women and white women much more strongly support these three gun policies, including a bare majority of support for the mandatory assault weapon buyback.

A 54 percent majority of voters think that mental illness is a bigger cause of mass shootings than the availability of guns, while 37 percent say gun availability is a bigger cause. But 54 percent of voters also think that stricter gun laws would help to decrease the number of mass shootings in the United States, while 43 percent don't think so. About four in ten voters are worried about being a victim of a mass shooting themselves.

Prejudice in the United States

Prejudice against immigrants is a very serious problem in the United States today, say 51 percent of voters, while 23 percent say it is a somewhat serious problem. When asked about other groups, voters' opinions varied:
  • 44 percent say prejudice against Muslim people is a very serious problem and 29 percent say it is a somewhat serious problem;
  • 44 percent say prejudice against Hispanic people and Latinos is a very serious problem and 25 percent say it is a somewhat serious problem;
  • 43 percent say prejudice against black people is a very serious problem and 29 percent say it is a somewhat serious problem;
  • 31 percent say prejudice against LGBTQ people is a very serious problem and 31 percent say it is a somewhat serious problem;
  • 27 percent say prejudice against Jewish people is a very serious problem and 35 percent say it is a somewhat serious problem;
  • 14 percent say prejudice against white people is a very serious problem and 30 percent say it is a somewhat serious problem.
In general, 64 percent of voters believe that the level of hatred and prejudice in the United States has increased since the 2016 election, with 28 percent saying it hasn't changed, and 6 percent saying it has decreased. And in the wake of recent events, 56 percent of voters say that President Trump's language and behavior have played a role in motivating white supremacists to commit violence, while 40 percent disagree.

From August 21 - 26, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,422 self-identified registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, including the design effect.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Doug Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts gold standard surveys using random digit dialing with live interviewers calling landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts nationwide surveys and polls in more than a dozen states on national and statewide elections, as well as public policy issues.
