Sample and Methodology detail

Many New Jersey voters say U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez was involved in serious wrongdoing, but they back the Democrat 49 - 32 percent over pharmaceutical executive Bob Hugin, his Republican challenger, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

Republicans back Hugin over Sen. Menendez 81 - 7 percent, as Democrats go with Menendez 85 - 3 percent. Independent voters back Menendez 41 - 36 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

Menendez was involved in "serious wrongdoing," 38 percent of voters say, while 20 percent say he was not involved and 37 percent say they haven't heard enough to decide.

Voters approve 46 - 39 percent of the job Menendez is doing, his best score in more than a year. The Democrat gets a divided 35 - 37 percent favorability.

For Hugin, 83 percent don't know enough to form an opinion of him.

Their 2018 vote for U.S. Senate will be more in opposition to President Donald Trump, 40 percent of voters say, as 20 percent say their vote will be more in support of the president and 37 percent say the president is not an important factor.

New Jersey voters disapprove 63 - 32 percent of the job President Trump is doing.

"New Jersey voters are sending Sen. Robert Menendez a mixed message. They far prefer him - he holds a 17-point lead over Republican challenger Bob Hugin in the race for his U.S. Senate seat. But they are skeptical about his guilt or innocence regarding federal corruption charges that were dropped after a hung jury," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac Poll. "In very blue New Jersey, the big 'D' next to Menendez' name is a big asset."

With 21 percent each, taxes and gun policy are the most important issues in deciding how they will vote for Senate this year, as 20 percent list ethics in government and 19 percent cite the economy.

New Jersey voters approve 44 - 23 percent of the job Gov. Phil Murphy is doing. Approval is 72 - 6 percent among Democrats and 41 - 22 percent among independent voters. Republicans disapprove 54 - 12 percent.

Voters approve 59 - 31 percent of the job U.S. Sen. Cory Booker is doing.

Voters support 59 - 37 percent allowing adults to legally possess small amounts of marijuana for personal use. Support is 63 - 33 percent among men and 55 - 41 percent among women. White voters support legalized marijuana 58 - 39 percent, with non-white support at 60 - 35 percent.

Only 9 percent of Garden State voters say they would definitely try marijuana if it were legal, while 13 percent say they would probably try; 18 percent say they would probably not try legal marijuana and 58 percent say they definitely would not try it.

New Jersey voters support 68 - 28 percent stricter gun laws in the state, with even stronger support for a number of other gun control measures:
  • 98 - 2 percent for background checks for all gun buyers;
  • 73 - 24 percent for a nationwide ban on the sale of assault weapons;
  • 72 - 25 percent for a ban on high-capacity magazines holding more than 10 rounds;
  • 79 - 17 percent to ban the sale of armor-piercing handgun ammunition.
Minimum Wage

New Jersey voters support 79 - 19 percent, including 58 - 40 percent among Republicans, raising the $8.60 per hour minimum wage. The minimum wage should be raised to $15 per hour, 33 percent of voters say, as 48 percent say raise the minimum wage to less than $15 per hour and 9 percent say raise it to more than $15 per hour.

"New Jersey's new governor, Phil Murphy, is off to a good start. Voters are optimistic, by a gaudy 64 - 28 percent, with the next four years under Gov. Phil Murphy. They support his key agenda items, legalized marijuana, gun control and the minimum wage," Brown said.

From March 8 - 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,052 New Jersey voters with a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts nationwide public opinion surveys, and statewide polls in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and Colorado as a public service and for research.
