Additional Trend Information

Only 23 percent of New York City voters say the mayor should retain complete control of the public schools, while 65 percent say the mayor should share control of the schools with other public officials, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Voters disapprove 46 - 37 percent of the way Mayor Bill de Blasio is handling public schools and only 25 percent are satisfied with public schools, with 60 percent dissatisfied, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina gets a split 33 - 31 percent approval rating, up from a negative 29 - 34 percent approval rating in a May 24 Quinnipiac University poll.

The mayor should increase the number of charter schools in the city, 45 percent of voters say, while 21 percent say he should reduce the number and 27 percent say he should leave the number unchanged.

If they had school-aged children, New York City voters say 51 - 37 percent that they would prefer the children attend a charter school rather than a public school.

"New York City voters share the State Legislature's skepticism over Mayor Bill de Blasio's management of the schools and would prefer him to share control with other elected officials - in effect going back to the old Board of Education," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"As parents, New Yorkers would favor putting their kids in a charter school over a traditional public school."

New York City voters disapprove 56 - 28 percent of the way Mayor de Blasio is handling political corruption. A total of 84 percent of voters think political corruption is a "very serious" or "somewhat serious" problem.

Voters say 53 - 28 percent that "de Blasio does favors for developers who make political contributions to campaigns in which he is involved." This compares to a 55 - 21 percent finding on this question in a May 25 Quinnipiac University poll.

Among voters who say the mayor does favors, 32 percent say the practice is illegal, while 55 percent say it is unethical, but not illegal.

Police Approval/Police Corruption

New York City voters approve 57 - 32 percent of the job Police Commissioner William Bratton is doing, near his all-time best job score of 58 - 29 percent in an October 30, 2015, Quinnipiac University poll. Voters say 44 - 30 percent that former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly was more effective than Bratton.

Voters approve 60 - 33 percent of the job police city-wide are doing and approve 69 - 27 percent of the job police in their community are doing.

A total of 72 percent of New York City voters say police corruption is a "very serious" or "somewhat serious" problem.

But 54 percent of voters say police corruption is "just a few police commanders doing favors for well-connected people," while 36 percent say police corruption is widespread.

"The cops get good marks in the poll for the way they do their jobs - they almost always do - but New Yorkers do worry about police corruption," Carroll said.

From July 21 - 28, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,310 New York City voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
