Sample and Methodology detail

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio begins his reelection campaign with a split 47 - 47 percent approval rating, his best score since January and up from a negative 42 - 51 percent approval rating August 1, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Mayor de Blasio does not deserve reelection, New York City voters say 49 - 39 percent. He tops possible challengers in a hypothetical Democratic primary, but former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn would be a serious challenger running as an independent candidate in a general election face-off, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

Results for a hypothetical Democratic primary show:
  • De Blasio - 34 percent;
  • Former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn - 15 percent;
  • City Comptroller Scott Stringer - 9 percent;
  • Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. - 7 percent;
  • Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams - 6 percent.
The racial divide which has marked every survey since de Blasio was elected continues today as black voters approve of the mayor 71 - 22 percent and white voters disapprove 67 - 28 percent. Hispanic voters approve 59 - 35 percent.

"Former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a big loser to Mayor Bill de Blasio four years ago, is the only city politician who gives him a run in the new Quinnipiac University poll, a benchmark measure as the reelection year begins," said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"At this early stage, only a general election challenge looks to be potential political trouble for the mayor. The city's black community loves him, as has been the case since Day One, and that big support gives him a commanding edge in a Democratic primary."

"Even with the racial split, Mayor de Blasio gets a stand-off in job approval. And a plurality of New Yorkers say he doesn't deserve a second term," Carroll added.

Mayor de Blasio, running as a Democrat, has only a 41 - 35 percent lead in a hypothetical race against Christine Quinn, running as an independent. De Blasio wins similar matchups against other possible challengers running as an independent:
  • 43 - 34 percent over Stringer;
  • 42 - 32 percent over Diaz;
  • 43 - 31 percent over Adams.
New York City voters give de Blasio a split 47 - 44 percent favorability rating. Quinn gets a 35 - 20 percent favorability, with 43 percent who don't know enough about her to form an opinion. The other contenders are largely unknown as the percentage of voters who don't know enough about them to form an opinion ranges from 63 percent to 74 percent.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is top of the heap as New York City voters approve 65 - 29 percent of the job he is doing as governor. Other job approval ratings are:
  • 53 - 13 percent for Stringer;
  • 45 - 15 percent for Public Advocate Letitia James;
  • 36 - 18 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito;
  • 37 - 30 percent for Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina.
"Gov. Andrew Cuomo, not on the city ballot but very much in city political calculations, has a commanding job approval score," Carroll said.

New York City voters approve 45 - 32 percent of the job the City Council is doing and say 51 - 32 percent that it is "a positive force which improves New York City."

Mayor de Blasio is honest and trustworthy, voters say 51 - 36 percent and he understands their problems, voters say 49 - 45 percent. But he does not have strong leadership qualities, voters say 50 - 44 percent.

From November 9 - 15, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,138 New York City voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. The survey includes 738 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percentage points. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia and the nation as a public service and for research.
