Sample and Methodology detail

New York City voters give Mayor Bill de Blasio his best job approval rating in a year, 50 - 42 percent, and say 47 - 44 percent that he deserves reelection, reversing a yearlong string of negatives on that question, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Mayor de Blasio's job approval is his best score since a 50 - 42 percent approval in a January 19, 2016, survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, and his first positive score since then. In a January 18 poll, voters said 48 - 42 percent that the mayor did not deserve reelection.

De Blasio leads a largely unknown Republican challenger, Paul Massey, 59 - 25 percent.

In a hypothetical Democratic primary, Mayor de Blasio gets 43 percent, topping the 40 percent needed to avoid a primary runoff. Former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn gets 14 percent, with 10 percent for City Comptroller Scott Stringer, 6 percent for Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz and 2 percent for State Sen. Tony Avella.

In the de Blasio-Massey faceoff, white voters tip to the mayor 42 - 39 percent. De Blasio leads 83 - 5 percent among black voters and 67 - 17 percent among Hispanic voters, 64 - 20 percent among women and 53 - 31 percent among men.

De Blasio leads in every borough except Staten Island, which goes to Massey 59 - 23 percent. The mayor's biggest lead, 71 - 14 percent, is in Manhattan.

"You can't beat somebody with nobody. And if the somebody is Mayor Bill de Blasio, the Quinnipiac University Poll numbers say the other names add up to nobody," said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"In a Democratic primary, de Blasio trounces everyone. The nearest challengers, Christine Quinn and Comptroller Scott Stringer - are barely in double digits.

"Paul Massey? First, New Yorkers would have to learn who he is."

The mayor also runs strong against other challengers running as independent candidates in a general election:
  • 45 - 34 percent over Quinn;
  • 46 - 31 percent over Diaz;
  • 49 - 32 percent over Stringer;
  • 54 - 25 percent over Avella.
New York City voters give de Blasio a 51 - 40 percent favorability rating, while 84 percent of voters don't know enough about Massey to form an opinion of him.

Looking at de Blasio's personal qualities, voters say:
  • 52 - 44 percent that he has strong leadership qualities;
  • 53 - 42 percent that he understands their problems;
  • 52 - 37 percent that he is honest and trustworthy.
"It's close, but more voters think de Blasio deserves reelection than not. And he's positive in the favorable-unfavorable measure and in the standard traits - leadership, empathy, honesty," Carroll said.

Job Approvals for Trump, Cuomo

New York City voters give their hometown President, Donald Trump a big Bronx cheer, disapproving 70 - 22 percent of the job he is doing.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo gets the best score from city voters, a 67 - 26 percent job approval rating. Job approval scores for other officials are:
  • 54 - 17 percent for City Comptroller Scott Stringer;
  • 48 - 18 percent for Public Advocate Letitia James;
  • 40 - 20 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito;
  • 38 - 33 percent for Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina.
De Blasio should be a national leader against Trump Administration policies, 53 percent of New York City voters say, while 38 percent say the mayor should try to get along with Trump. Voters say 65 - 22 percent that Gov. Cuomo would be more effective protecting New York City interests with Republicans in control of the White House and Congress.

From February 23 - 27, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,001 New York City voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points. The survey includes 640 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
