Sample and Methodology detail

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is leaving his challengers in the dust as he takes 61 percent of likely voters in his reelection bid, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Assembly member Nicole Malliotakis, the Republican challenger, has 17 percent, with 8 percent for Reform Party candidate Sal Albanese and 6 percent for independent candidate Bo Dietl, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. This survey of likely voters can not be compared to earlier surveys of registered voters.

New York City likely voters are divided along racial lines:
  • De Blasio gets 44 percent of white voters, with 32 percent for Malliotakis, 11 percent for Albanese and 5 percent for Dietl;
  • Black voters go 84 percent for de Blasio, 5 percent for Dietl, 4 percent for Malliotakis and 1 percent for Albanese;
  • Hispanic voters go 65 percent for the mayor, 10 percent each for Albanese and Dietl and 9 percent for Malliotakis.
Malliotakis leads 47 - 34 percent among likely voters in Staten Island, while de Blasio sweeps the other boroughs by wide margins.

The economy is the most important issue in deciding how they will vote for mayor, 21 percent of voters say, with 20 percent each for education and crime; 17 percent say housing and 10 percent cite homelessness.

"With a solid grip on four out of five boroughs and his challengers still distant also rans, Mayor Bill de Blasio would seem to be gliding toward reelection in about four weeks," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"The racial divide, which has bedeviled Mayor de Blasio since his first day in office, continues even as he finishes his first term."

"The economy, education and crime stack up evenly in New Yorkers' worry list."

New York City likely voters give de Blasio a 56 - 36 percent favorability rating. His challengers remain largely unknown:
  • 64 percent of likely voters don't know enough about Malliotakis to form an opinion of her;
  • 66 percent don't know enough about Dietl;
  • 67 percent don't know enough about Albanese.
De Blasio gets a 58 - 36 percent job approval rating. Approval is 83 - 10 percent among black voters and 63 - 31 percent among Hispanic voters, while white voters disapprove 56 - 38 percent.

The Mayor deserves reelection, likely voters say 57 - 37 percent.

Grading the job de Blasio is doing as mayor:
  • 14 percent of likely voters give him an A;
  • 36 percent give him a B;
  • 23 percent say C;
  • 10 percent give a D;
  • 15 percent give an F.
President Trump, Gov. Cuomo Approval Ratings

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo soars among New York City likely voters with a 70 - 24 percent approval rating, including 53 - 40 percent among Republicans.

These same voters disapprove 78 - 18 percent of the job President Donald Trump is doing. Job approval ratings for other leaders are:
  • 59 - 14 percent for Comptroller Scott Stringer;
  • 64 - 16 percent for Police Commissioner James O'Neill;
  • 51 - 20 percent for Public Advocate Letitia James;
  • 43 - 21 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito;
  • 44 - 32 percent for Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina.
From September 27 - October 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 731 New York City likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 4.7 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys nationwide, and in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and Colorado as a public service and for research.
