Sample and Methodology detail

New York State voters support 73 - 19 percent, including 51 - 42 percent among Republicans, updating state law to further protect a woman's right to choose an abortion, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

No listed party, gender, education, age, racial or regional group opposes added protection for the right to choose, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

New York State voters agree 73 - 19 percent with the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision establishing a woman's right to an abortion. Again, no group disagrees.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned and the issue of abortion is left to the states,
  • 36 percent of voters say abortion should be legal in all cases in New York;
  • 40 percent say it should be legal in most cases in New York;
  • 13 percent say it should be illegal in most cases in the state;
  • 5 percent say it should be illegal in all cases.
New York voters say 46 - 41 percent that the U.S. Senate should not confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

But only 4 percent of voters statewide, including 5 percent of women, say abortion is the most important issue in deciding how they will vote for governor. With 23 percent, the economy tops the list of most important issues, with 19 percent each for health care and government corruption and 15 percent each for education and taxes.

"By overwhelming margins, New Yorkers agree on abortion rights and support updating state law to better protect a woman's right to choose," said Mary Snow, polling analyst for the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"When they go to the polls, however, there are several other issues that are more important than abortion in choosing a candidate for governor, including the economy, health care and government corruption."

"Democrats are more likely to say health care is their top issue than Republicans or independent voters. Republicans are more likely to say taxes than Democrats," Snow added.

Government corruption is a "very serious" problem in New York State, 45 percent of voters say, while 40 percent say it is "somewhat serious" and 9 percent say it is "not too serious."

New York has about as much government corruption as other states, 48 percent of voters say, as 32 percent say it has more corruption than other states and 12 percent say it has less corruption.

State officials convicted of a felony should lose their pensions, voters say 74 - 18 percent.

"You'll be hard pressed to find New Yorkers who don't think government corruption is a problem in New York State. A combined 85 percent consider it a 'very serious' or 'somewhat serious' problem. Yet, it's not the defining issue in the race," Snow said.

President Trump. Sen. Schumer Approval

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, is winning the approval rating war with President Donald Trump, but the battle is taking its toll:
  • New York State voters approve 50 - 41 percent of the job Schumer is doing, compared to 57 - 35 percent May 2 and Schumer's worst approval rating ever;
  • Voters give President Trump a negative 36 - 57 percent approval rating, compared to a negative 31 - 66 percent May 2.
From July 12 - 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 934 New York State voters, with a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts nationwide public opinion surveys, and statewide polls in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and Texas as a public service and for research.
