June 13, 2018 - Ohio Governor's Race Too Close To Call, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Brown Has Big Lead In U.S. Senate Contest PDF format Trend Information Sample and Methodology detail The Ohio governor's race is too close to call, with former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray, the Democrat, at 42 percent and State Attorney General Mike DeWine, the Republican, at 40 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today. There are wide gender and racial gaps as men back DeWine 47 - 36 percent, while women back Cordray 48 - 35 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. White voters go Republican by a narrow 44 - 39 percent. Non-white voters go Democratic 56 - 23 percent. DeWine takes Republicans 85 - 4 percent, as Cordray takes Democrats 81 - 8 percent. Independent voters are divided with 39 percent for Cordray and 37 percent for DeWine. DeWine gets a 39 - 31 percent favorability rating, with 27 percent who don't know enough about him to form an opinion. Cordray gets a 32 - 15 percent favorability rating, while 51 percent don't know enough about him to form an opinion. Ohio Gov. John Kasich gets a 52 - 36 percent job approval rating, doing better with Democrats than he does with his fellow Republicans, Democrats approve of Kasich 57 - 33 percent. Republicans are divided as 46 percent approve and 44 percent disapprove. The reverse party split continues as Ohio voters say 51 - 41 percent they do not want Kasich to run for president in 2020. Democrats say yes 52 - 39 percent as Republicans say no 73 - 21 percent. "The closeness between Richard Cordray and Attorney General Mike DeWine should not be surprising, since this race for governor is a re-run of the race between the two men in 2010 for the attorney general's job that DeWine won by one percentage point," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac Poll. "Now, Cordray and DeWine split the key independent vote and get roughly the same share of their party bases," Brown added. U.S. Senate Race In Ohio's U.S. Senate race, women voters propel Democratic incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown to a 51 - 34 percent overall lead over U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci, the Republican challenger. Women back the Democrat 58 - 25 percent. Men are divided with 44 percent for Renacci and 43 percent for Brown. Brown leads 91 - 2 percent among Democrats and 51 - 30 percent among independent voters. Renacci takes Republicans 79 - 6 percent. Ohio voters approve 55 - 29 percent of the job Brown is doing and give him a 48 - 29 percent favorability rating. Renacci gets a negative 22 - 26 percent favorability rating, as 50 percent don't know enough about him to form an opinion. Health care is the most important issue in deciding how they will vote for U.S. Senator, 28 percent of Ohio voters say. Another 25 percent cite the economy, with 15 percent for immigration and 14 percent for gun policy. "Sen. Sherrod Brown is in a strong position for re-election with a 17-point lead and an opponent who is not well-known," Brown said. Trump Approval Ohio voters disapprove 54 - 43 percent of the job President Donald Trump is doing. Republicans approve 91 - 7 percent. Disapproval is 94 - 5 percent among Democrats and 57 - 37 percent among independent voters. U.S. Sen. Rob Portman gets a 42 - 36 percent approval rating. Their vote for U.S. Senator will be more to express support for President Trump, 28 percent of voters say, while 30 percent say their vote will be more in opposition of Trump. Another 39 percent say Trump is not an important factor in their vote.
