Trend Information
Sample and Methodology detail

Ohio voters support 55 - 34 percent raising tariffs on products imported from China, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

Support drops to a divided 46 - 46 percent when voters are asked if they support tariffs, "if the tariffs raised the cost of goods that you buy," the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University Poll finds.

Voters oppose 50 - 41 percent tariffs on Chinese products "if the tariffs resulted in China raising tariffs on American products."

There are deep party and gender divisions: Republicans support tariffs on Chinese products, even if China retaliates, 63 - 28 percent. Democrats oppose these tariffs 68 - 19 percent. Independent voters are divided with 44 percent for tariffs and 48 percent opposed.

Women oppose tariffs if there is retaliation 55 - 31 percent. Men support tariffs 52 - 44 percent.

Ohio voters oppose 45 - 35 percent imposing a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports.

Opposition increases to 57 - 32 percent when votes are asked if they support steel and aluminum tariffs if they raise the cost of goods they purchase. In this case, Republicans are the only listed party, gender, education, age or racial group to support tariffs.

"Despite Ohio's reputation as a blue-collar bastion, Buckeye State voters overall are not supportive of increasing tariffs on steel and aluminum imported into the United States from foreign lands," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac Poll.

"Ohio voters are more supportive of raising tariffs on goods from China, until they consider the cost to them, and the possibility that raising tariffs could lead to a trade war," Brown added.

Immigration

Ohio voters say 76 - 19 percent that undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, so-called "Dreamers," should be allowed to stay and eventually apply for citizenship. Every listed group supports this measure by wide margins.

Offered three options on what to do with all illegal immigrants currently living in the U.S.:
  • 60 percent of Ohio voters say they should be allowed to stay and eventually apply for citizenship;
  • 10 percent say they should be allowed to stay, but not apply for citizenship;
  • 26 percent say they should be required to leave the U.S.
Keep the Affordable Care Act, Obamacare, in place 51 percent of Ohio voters say, while 44 percent say repeal it. Supporting the Affordable Care Act are Democrats 91 - 6 percent and independent voters 53 - 41 percent. Republicans vote 91 - 6 percent for repeal.

Ohio voters are divided 43 - 44 percent in their approval of the 2017 tax law. Republicans approve 84 - 4 percent, as Democrats disapprove 82 - 8 percent. Independent voters are divided as 43 percent approve and 41 percent disapprove.

From June 7 - 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,082 Ohio voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.
