The U.S. Senate should confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's nominee, to the U.S. Supreme Court, Texas voters say 50 - 33 percent in a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

Women are divided as 42 percent support confirmation, with 39 percent opposed, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. Men support Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court 59 - 26 percent.

Kavanaugh would not make the Supreme Court too conservative, voters say 47 - 38 percent.

Texas voters agree 62 - 30 percent with the U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision.

Republicans disagree 51 - 40 percent with Roe v. Wade, the only listed party, gender, education, age or racial group to disagree.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned and the issue of abortion is left to the states:
  • 20 percent of voters say abortion in Texas should be legal in all cases;
  • 40 percent of voters say abortion in Texas should be legal in most cases;
  • 23 percent of voters say abortion in Texas should be illegal in most cases;
  • 11 percent of voters say abortion in Texas should be illegal in all cases.
"Texas voters, especially men, support Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be the nation's next Supreme Court justice, with 50 percent favoring his confirmation and 33 percent opposed," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac Poll.

"Opinions on that question skew strongly along partisan lines and a solid plurality do not think his confirmation will make the court too conservative.

"Texans overwhelmingly support the Roe v. Wade decision and should the Supreme Court reverse it, they would support a state law that would allow abortion in all or most cases."

Separating children from their parents at the border "was a bad policy and a violation of human rights," 56 percent of Texas voters say. Another 14 percent say "it was a bad policy but not a violation of human rights" and 19 percent say it was a good policy.

But Texas voters are divided in their support of the Trump Administration's zero tolerance policy, as 47 percent support the measure with 48 percent opposed.

Men support zero tolerance 55 - 41 percent, with women opposed 54 - 40 percent. White voters support it 58 - 37 percent. Opposition is 67 - 27 percent among black voters and 63 - 34 percent among Hispanic voters.

Republicans support zero tolerance 78 - 18 percent, with Democrats opposed 85 - 11 percent. Independent voters are divided 47 - 47 percent.

Immigrants from other cultures have a mainly positive impact on American society, 64 percent of Texas voters say, as 20 percent say immigrants have a mainly negative impact.

Republicans say "mainly positive impact" 45 - 36 percent and all other listed groups say "mainly positive" by much wider margins.

Texas voters oppose building a wall on the border with Mexico by a narrow 51 - 45 percent.

"Texas voters are slightly opposed to President Donald Trump's proposed border wall. But their support level is higher than what Quinnipiac University has found in its national polls," Brown said.

From July 26 - 31, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,118 Texas voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts nationwide public opinion surveys, and statewide polls in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and Texas as a public service and for research.
