Turkey is the main course for Thanksgiving dinner, 80 percent of New York City voters say in a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

While 47 percent of New Yorkers plan to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade on television, only 7 percent plan to watch it in person.

And only 1 percent plan to watch a football game live on Thanksgiving, while 36 percent plan to watch it on TV. Men will be tuned into football, 53 - 44 percent. Only 23 percent of woman plan to watch football on TV.

"New Yorkers come from all over the world, but one of the few things most of us agree upon is turkey for Thanksgiving," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Once upon a time, the Thanksgiving Day football game was almost as traditional as turkey. But going to the game has been replaced by watching it on TV, at least for men.

"And those couch potatoes take the same attitude when it comes to the Thanksgiving Day Parade."

Only 4 percent of New Yorkers are making restaurant reservations for Thanksgiving dinner, while 41 percent are staying home and 52 percent are eating at someone else's home.

Most New Yorkers - 53 percent - plan to spend about the same as last year on holiday gifts, while 32 percent plan to spend less and only 11 percent plan to spend more.

"Tough economic times take their toll on holiday gift-giving," Carroll said.

From November 17 - 23, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,147 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and nationwide as a public service and for research.
